Tips to Having a Safe New Year’s Eve

It just seemed like yesterday when we celebrated New Year 2019 and now it is time to celebrate 2020!
People celebrate New Year in many different ways from large outdoor celebrations to extravagant
indoor parties to more intimate family gatherings at home.
Take extra care during New Year celebrations. Many of the things we enjoy during this festive period,
such as fireworks, fairy lights, candles, paper hats and decorations, can all be fire hazards when proper
care is not taken.
Keep New Year celebration with these safety tips:
1. If you have overnight guests, make sure that they know about your family’s fire escape plans.
2. Keep pets and children away from lit candles and fireplaces. Also, keep matches and lighters in a
locked cabinet out of reach of children.
3. Test home smoke alarms on a monthly basis, especially before a big party. Replace the batteries on
the smoke alarm if needed.
4. Stay in the kitchen when cooking, broiling, or frying. Do not leave the stove unattended.
5. At large New Year’s Eve celebrations, keep an eye out for possible fire sources such as candles
burning, cigarettes or cigars burning, indoor fireworks, or other heat sources that could make your feel
unsafe.
6. Check to make sure the building has a wide entrance and opens for an easy exit. Make sure exits are
not blocked by decorations.
7. Ask smokers to smoke outside during your party.
8. Do not let children near any fireworks that are left over.
9. If you choose to shoot off fireworks, be sure to follow proper safety precautions.
10. Do NOT use consumer fireworks to shoot off on New Year’s Eve.
11. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby for emergencies.
