A grease fire damage can be unexpected disaster for kitchen and home. Grease fires are difficult to extinguish. Putting water on grease fire or trying to snuff it out with towels can make it worse and can lead the fire to spreading.

Putting out grease fire requires skills, a speedy reaction, and most importantly the presence of mind.

Here are following steps on how to put out grease fire:

  1. Turn off the heat. One thing you should never do is to pick up the pan. Otherwise, the fire can spread to you or the grease could spill into the counter or kitchen floor, causing the fire to spread easily.
  2. Put a lid on the pot or frying pan to cut off oxygen to the fire. Let the pan cool before touching it and cleaning up the mess.
  3. If the fire is out of control, the most important thing to do is to call 911 and get everyone outside.
  4. Do NOT pour water on a grease fire. Putting water on grease can lead the fire to spreading.
  5. Do NOT fan the fire with a dry or wet cloth, it can make it worse and spread the fire.
  6. If the fire is too huge to handle, cease it using a fire extinguisher.

How to prevent a grease fire:

  1. Never leave your pot or frying pan unattended.
  2. Always keep a metal lid on the counter to cover burning pan or pot.
  3. Slowly heat the oil to your desired temperature.
  4. Turn off the burner if you suspect the grease is getting too hot.
