The coronavirus pandemic that’s shattered lives throughout high-income countries is hitting the developing world as well. The outbreak has spread around the world; it has become more difficult to manage. Countries closed borders and implemented measures to lessen the spread of the virus from national quarantines to school closures. The new coronavirus can spread unnoticed so easily, many governments have felt the best way to ensure people have minimal contact with each other is to order total lockdowns, with people only being allowed to leave to get food or medicine, and to practice social distancing when they do leave their houses. But you may have noticed that some people have responded very differently to new rules on lockdown.

On May 1st in the afternoon, a large crowd gathered in the front lawn of the Ventura County Government Center.  More than 500 people took part in the event. The people protested the decision to shut down businesses and church services amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants dressed in red, white and blue as they circled the complex in vehicles creating a steady stream of honking their horns and waving signs with freedom.

Even though coronavirus has spread and there are more than 500 cases in the county, it’s disappointing to see hundreds of people disregarding safety protocol. There was no social distancing at the rally and no one was wearing masks. The participants exposed themselves to sickness.

The rally was peaceful. But the protesters were warned that for not following the safety guidelines they could face the potential for prosecution.

Under the statewide stay at home order, county leaders may not be able to reopen much until Governor Gavin Newsom returns control to the counties.
