PROTECT YOUR KIDS FROM FIRES AND BURNS

Children are very playful. They are active, creative, and curious, and no place is safe. One of the most disastrous of all home-related dangers is fire. Each year, thousands of children end up in emergency rooms for fire and burn injuries. Kids don’t always know home fire dangers and risks, so it’s important for parents to take precautionary measures to keep everyone safe.

INDOORS

  1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every sleeping area. Smoke alarms reduce the chances of dying in a fire by nearly 50 percent. Install a smoke alarm that has 10 – year battery.
  2. Keep flammable items like towels and oven mitts off the stove top so kids don’t move them toward the fire.
  3. Limit distractions when cooking and don't leave a hot oven or stovetop unattended.
  4. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of emergency, and make sure you know how it works.
  5. Store matches and lighters in locked drawers or cabinets. Put out candles before leaving the room.
  6. If you have a fireplace, use a guard door to keep kids from getting too close.
  7. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials like bedding and drapes.
  8. Cover sockets to prevent children from inserting their fingers or other objects. Use tamper- resistant receptacles.
  9. Cover, move or remove electric wires.
  10. Teach children what to do if their clothes catch fire (stop, drop and roll):
  • Stop immediately.
  • Drop to the floor and cover the face with hands.
  • Roll on the floor to put out flames.
  1. Together, have your family plan and practice a home fire escape plan with two ways out of your house in case of a fire.

OUTDOORS

  1. Don’t let children play near grills, fire pits, campfires, kerosene lamps, and supplemental heaters.
  2. Avoid using fireworks especially when children are around.
  3. Never let kids hold sparklers. Sparklers burn at 1,200 degrees, enough to melt glass.

Fire safety is all about taking precautions and being careful.
