Doing the laundry is part of our daily or weekly routine. Most people don’t know that clothes dryers are one of the major causes of house fires. The most common cause is failure to do a thorough cleaning, because a lint trap is not a foolproof method for catching all the fuzzy stuff from clothes, lint can gradually build up and catch fire in the heating element or exhaust duct.
To prevent fire damage from happening in your home, here are five things you can do that don’t take a lot of time out of your schedule.
- CLEAN THE LINT SCREEN
Clean out the lint screen every time you use the dryer. The screen catches lint during drying cycles and if it’s not cleaned, the fuzziest from our clothing can build up and cause a potential fire hazard.
- INSPECT THE EXHAUST VENT PIPE
One of the most common causes of dryer fires are blocked dryer vent. Accumulation of lint within the hoses restricts airflow, causing it to overheat and potentially catch fire. Clear out the vent pipe to reduce the chance of fire and to maintain the efficiency of the dryer.
- CLEAR THE AREA AROUND THE DRYER
Remove flammables like cleaning supplies away from your dryer. Sweep out dust regularly in the areas around and underneath your dryer. Limiting the amount of clutter near your dryer, you decrease the chances of a potential fire hazard.
- DO NOT OVERLOAD THE DRYER
When you overload the dryer, you upset the airflow, the clothes will take longer to dry. It can damage the drum and other components of dryer. The fuller your dryer is, the longer it will take to dry your clothes and the hotter it will get.
