CANDLE FIRE SAFETY AND TIPS FOR A HOLIDAY SEASON
We used candles to mark special events or create a charming atmosphere in your home, but it can be a serious fire hazard if not properly used. If you like to burn candles during these colder months. Here are some helpful tips to avoid fires caused by candles.
- Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. Most fires started by candles occur in the bedroom. Always supervise rooms with lit candles; blow them out if you leave the room or go to bed. Don’t use candles in bedrooms or other sleeping areas.
- Keep candles away from anything flammable. Keep matches and lighters in a safe place.
- Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Candles should be placed where children and pets can’t reach them.
- Keep the pool of wax in the candle clear of debris such as wick trimmings. Always read and follow the manufacturer's use and safety instructions carefully.
- Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. If your candle is in a candle holder, it should be sturdy enough to avoid being easily knocked over.
- Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Don't burn too many candles in a small room.
- Never use candles during a power outage or as a night light: Flashlights, or other battery powered lights, are much safer than candles.
- Place burning candles at least three inches apart. This won’t melt one another, or create drafts that can cause the candles to flare.
- Burn candles within a 1-foot circle, free of anything that can burn.
- Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from clothing, furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, decorations, etc. Never place lit candles in windows where they may ignite blinds or curtains.
- Do not burn a candle for longer than the manufacturer recommends.
- Never use a candle for light when fueling equipment such as kerosene.
- Light Candles with long Matches.
- Never Extinguish a Candle with Water. Splashing water can cause hot liquids to spit and spread rapidly.
- Ensure the Candle is Fully Out.
