BAD THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN THERE’S MOISTURE IN YOUR CRAWL SPACE
When there is a flood in your crawl space, the problem and the damage are clear. Less obvious moisture can also lead to a wet crawl space and cause problems that you do not expect. So, if your home has a crawl space, it is very important that you make sure that it stays dry and free from moisture. Keeping your crawlspace dry is essential in avoiding the following:
- Mold
Mold spores are little particles of fungi that usually float around in harmless amounts, are attracted to humid environments where they can grow. A wet crawl space is a perfect location for mold to grow and start consuming organic materials. Moisture can seep in cracks in your foundation.
- Insect infestation
Dust mites and other pests love a wet environment that your flooding crawl space can provide. Cockroaches, spiders, and termites are also attracted to humid environments and the darkness of a crawl space.
- Wood Rot
The water vapor found in the air of your crawl space will keep wood damp and cause floor joist and support beams to decay, which could cause the foundation of your house to sag.
- High Energy Bills
House with damp crawl spaces cost more to heat and cool. The damp air requires more energy to change the temperature which leads to higher energy bills.
The best method to reduce the amount of moisture in your crawl space is to perform space encapsulation. This is an incredibly involved process which requires a professional or expert that will create a barrier on the walls and floors with a heavy duty plastic and drainage mats. Completely sealing off any vents or gaps between windows and openings.
