3 THINGS YOU SHOULD INCLUDE IN YOUR FIRE ESCAPE PLAN
7/9/2021 (Permalink)
In the instance of a fire, a quick and safe evacuation of everyone in your home is of the utmost importance. Fire and smoke spread fast and could leave people trapped in dangerous, inescapable locations if an evacuation plan is no place. Home fires can be scary, but you can improve your family’s chance of getting out safely if you come up with a fire escape plan in advance. Putting together a detailed plan can seem overwhelming, so try to consider what you need to include in your fire escape plan.
- Identify All Exits
Print out or draw a floor plan of your home, Mark all exits in a bright color including all exterior doors and windows. A clear explanation, clear signage and visual representations where appropriate will instruct people on how to exit safely. Consider putting a fire escape ladder next to all upper story windows and make sure all basement windows have fire ladders as well.
- Perform a Drill
The best way for everyone to react calmly and to do their part in safely exiting the burning building is to rehearse in advance. Identify areas of the home where fires are likely to occur, make sure each family member knows the safest ways to exit the home from various rooms. Organize a home fire drill once every two months. Be sure to focus on the children and their knowledge about fire safety.
- The Meeting Point
Once every member of your household exits the building, you should pick out a place where everyone will meet. Your meeting place could be on the street corner or at a neighbor’s house in the event of inclement weather.
