Whether there is a fire in your home or workplace, there are things you need to do to ensure you remain safe and unharmed. Find a clear exit and leave as soon as possible. Deaths and injuries caused by fire could have been prevented if people do not make some common mistakes. If you find yourself caught up in a fire related incident, one of the first challenges that you face is working out how to tackle the fire or whether to tackle it at all.

  1. Judging the Size of the Fire

One of the most important things to remember in the event of a fire emergency is that not all fires can have tackled with a fire extinguisher. Make sure you know what type of fire it is. If you doubt your ability to extinguish the fire, leave the premises immediately and call the fire brigade.

  1. Incorrect Extinguishing Techniques

When using water to put out a fire, you should use at least two liters at a time. Do not use water to put out electrical or oil fires. Water should only be used on fires involving solids such as wood, plastic or paper.

  1. Poor Evacuation Planning

A lot of people do not know how to evacuate in the event of a fire. If you are an owner, it is important that you have an established evacuation route that all users of the building are aware.

  1. Not Knowing the Correct Extinguisher Types

Know the different types of fire extinguisher for different types of fire.  Each must be used exclusively for the type of fire they are designed to avoid making things worse. Using the wrong class of fire extinguisher can make things worse. Massive flashes and huge flames might occur and you may result burned or electrocuted.

  1. Forgetting to Shut Off Power

In the event of an electrical fire, it is important that shut off all the power to the source of the fire. If you do this early enough, this action alone can often stop the fire, but if it doesn’t it at least prevents the fire from increasing. Make sure you know the power supply is located in your building.
